Our History
Apte Wachan Mandir, Ichalkaranji is one of the oldest public libraries in Maharashtra. It was established in 1870 under the royal patronage of Shrimant Govindrao Ghorpade. Originally named "Native General Library", it was renamed in 1910 as Apte Wachan Mandir, in honour of Adv. Rambhau Apte.
Under Shrimant Narayanrao's rule, the library expanded significantly—more books, increased membership, and various socio-cultural programs began. After Independence, the building was transferred to the Government but returned to library ownership in 1981. A new spacious building was completed in 1986.
